As an example of how easily I can be amused/pleased, I had to purchase new wiper blades for my car this morning - the old ones decided to shred quite spectacularly when I ran them. I got these new Bosch Icons that do the "hug the windshield" thing and sweet jeezus, they rule! I was looking for any excuse to run my wipers, and I even stayed behind a truck the whole way to the T stop so that I'd have to use them. I'm sure the Kool-Aid smile I was sporting didn't make any sense to my fellow commuters.

Oh, dude, these new "Beam Blade" style wipers are the cat's ass. I just picked up a pair on recommendation from another friend and, yeah, they are worth every extra (many) dollar(s). Damn. Never thought I'd get enthusiastic about windshield wipers, but there you go.

As an added bonus, they have no joints to freeze up and then miss large swaths of windshield in the freezing rain. Hooray!

Yeah, they were pretty expensive, but so. very. worth it.

And that added bonus of no joints rocks when your car doesn't have the winter package due to Subaru being meanies who don't like us Impreza drivers.

I have an Outback, and it has the "winter package," but all that entails is seat heaters (which f*ckin rock but don't do anything for your windshield), a ski rack, heated side mirrors (which I think I've used twice in six years) and a little strip of stickum-defroster (like the lines on your back window) along the bottom edge of the windshield where your wiper blades sit. Which, you will note, does exactly *squat* to keep the joints in the wipers themselves from freezing up.

Short form: you're not missing anything.

Hmm... suddenly I don't feel so un-loved. I think I'd still like to have the heated side mirrors and seats though. I don't have a garage, so my mirrors tend to ice over during the storms and well, heated seats, dude.
