If any of y'all out there are Linux users and could help me out with the install of a wireless air card, I'd be most appreciative. My work laptop is the first machine I've ever been exposed to linux on, and while I can generally find my way around, the finer points of getting external hardware to be recognized are currently beyond me. If you can spare some help, you'd have my gratitude and an IOU for drinks and dinner.

The details so far:
HP pavilion dv6000
AMD Turion 64x2 1.6GHz
1 gig of ram
32-bit operating system
running vista :( and fedora

following the install steps for the verizon usb wireless card install (which are woefully inadequate - basically just "put the cd in and run it") and instructions from Ken Kinders's site (http://kenkinder.com/evdo-pc5740/). We managed to get it working for the vista end of things, but Fedora doesn't seem to want to recognize it. It looks like it installs okay - running:

/etc/ppp/peers/1xevdo

we get:

ttyUSB1
115200
debug
noauth
defaultroute
usepeerdns
connect-delay 10000
user 6175194764@vzw3g.com
show-password
crtscts
lock
lcp-echo-failure 4
lcp-echo-interval 65535
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -t3 -f /etc/ppp/peers/1xevdo_chat'

But when we run:

/etc/ppp/peers/1xevdo_chat

We get:

# AT$QCMIPGETP "login" name used for MobileIP, which usually matches your MIN.
# AT+GSN ESN in hex
# AT+GMR firmware revision and build date.
# AT+CSQ first number indicates the signal strength above -109
# dBm (in
# 2 dBm increments). A value of 7 or higher (-95 dBm) can be
# considered adequate. 31 is the max. (Possible values in
# Audiovox PC5740 are 0, 7, 15, 23, 31.)
# AT+CDV=*22899 Update PRL. at+cdv=*22899 | OK | Lost carrier.

If I understand the directions correctly, you are supposed to run:

pppd call 1xevdo
tail -f /var/log/messages

What happens when you do that?
